Sounds drastic. Especially for content creators who may still need Tumblr for commissions while they find an alternative.
If you can swing it, here’s why:
I suspect that the December 17th deadline is so that Verizon/Yahoo can clean house and make Tumblr appealing to investors. This is a Q4/Q1 fire sale kind of thing. It makes a certain amount of business sense to make this change. Human-lead content curation (e.g. separating the CP from the legit) is expensive and time-consuming. I doubt they have the money for it. They already sold off Flickr. As a long-time Flickr pro user, I’m not pleased by the change and increase in pro account price, but I get it.
Investors are looking for a user base. User base is a prime attraction for investment or buy-out for a social media platform or application (I speak from experience as a co-founder of Rhinobird.tv).
Every account that is cancelled will be one less account in Tumblr’s user base for their pitch. I assume that there are millions of accounts with some percentage simply being abandoned accounts that haven’t been used in years. So cancelling one’s account on the way out the door won’t really matter unless the number of cancelled accounts reaches several hundred thousand at least.
If you decide to leave and cancel, then I also recommend sending a polite message to Tumblr staff, or tweet to the account about why you are leaving.
Finally, using Twitter to voice your concerns and thoughts about this issue will increase its visibility. They ain’t gonna like that. Media outlets that cater to tech entrepreneurs, and Silicon Valley types are going to be all over this.
I never ask for reblogs, but I will this one time.
Effectively, make Tumblr look as bad as it is, but in a professional setting.
Be polite, but firm in your experience and your displeasure in why you left and won’t be returning.
Make investors see that this is a money sink and not worth investing in.
You kiddos have no idea how groundbreaking this was. Like there’s a reason THE lesbian website for a billion years was called After Ellen. She changed everything.
oh man you know that feeling that’s like kind of an ache right between your heart and your stomach? like nostalgic knowing of pain? that’s how the scared look in Ellen’s eyes makes me feel.
Look at her hand too and how nervous she is. Every gay and lesbian person knows this feeling, because we know there are assumptions and consequences and there’s no telling how someone will react.
And let no one forget that she suffered consequences for this. It wasn’t just a moment of cathartic unburdening and then business as usual.
Right, she lost her first TV show. She worked hard to get up to where she is today.
Ellen lost her TV show and didn’t get offered another job for the next 3 years. All while facing harsh critic from most of the world. Not to mention that Oprah, who immediately said yes to playing her therapist in this episode, got her own fair share of disrespectful and mostly racist comments. All over this one episode on a sitcom. Correct me if I’m wrong but I believe that over 40 million people watched this episode to see the first openly gay character on television.
This is history and it better fucking be in the history books for next generations.
I thought Ellen’s career was over; I remember watching this in real time. It’s amazing she’s not only where she is today but that she’s so widely liked and seen as nonthreatening.
Let’s not forget: she lost her TV show and later that same year, Will & Grace, featuring a straight man playing a gay man in the title role, debuted to thunderous acclaim.
(( although a stable platform is still being determined, I feel as though Twitter will do nicely for now! it’s funny how I rise from the sea, but now must jump ship along with so many other talented content creators. it’s a shame really.
we can only hope Tumblr will figure itself out at some point, but that’s just me being an optimist. with the way things are going, I’ve already archived/exported the entirety of my blog’s content. I plan to continue using my current audio platforms and will link on Twitter as said content is made/re-uploaded (say if a particular audio was only uploaded to Tumblr and not already on Soundcloud/Soundgasm) . it’ll certainly be a new experience for me as I’m rather new with Twitter, but looking forward to what the future brings! things may be a little confusing/out of sorts for a while as we all adjust to this change, but I will be sure to update you on anything I decide upon or else add to how this whole Twitter she-bang is gonna go down.
thanks as always aces for hanging in there with me. we’ve got this! I wish the best to you regarding these new changes here on Tumblr and look forward to seein’ ya on Twitter! have a good one! ))
